What numbers should be encoded?
Please request a 10 to 16 digit number that is masked/encrypted when it is encoded on the magnetic stripe. If possible, ask for a number that follows a sequence.
On what track do the cards need to encoded, Track 1 or 2?
Card Number should be encoded identically on Track 1 and Track 2
"Hi-Co" or "Lo-Co"?
Either will work. The cards we have made are Lo-Co.
How many digits does the data need to be?
Any string will work, but we recommend 19 or less.
2-D QR Code
Toast utilizes a 2-D Barcode which points to a unique URL for each card that we generate. Each cards made can have this QR Code printed on the back and pointed to its corresponding URL. When scanned by the POS, this will act as a method of detecting the card number - similar to keying in or swiping a magnetic stripe - to be added to the check.
Other Barcode Types
Toast does not currently support traditional barcodes to be scanned in the POS for Gift Card purposes.
What does Toast need?
If you have your cards made from a 3rd Party Vendor instead of through Toast, please be able to provide a full list of all cards that were made in spreadsheet or plain text format.
Please refer to this article about Importing Gift Cards for more information on this process.
