What type of American Express account is needed?
Toast requires a Direct Account with American Express ("Amex ESA program ID")
We cannot accept other types of Merchant Accounts from American Express such as OptBlue or One Point.
If you wish to accept American Express through Toast, please read the information below:
Existing American Express Merchants
If you have an existing, Direct American Express Merchant ID, please email it to email@example.com and include the restaurant name and that you'd like accept AMEX using this Merchant ID (MID). We will update our processing information which can take 1-3 business days to take effect.
New Customers without American Express MIDs
If you do not currently have a Direct American Express MID and would like to accept American Express, please call American Express Merchant Services directly to have one setup. They can be reached at 800-528-5200 and one of their representatives will assist you. This generally takes about 10-15 minutes.
Toast cannot contact American Express on your behalf to have this created.
Once you have obtained this number, please email it to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Once we have this number we will process your request and should have you accepting American Express in 1-3 business days.
